Welcome to AVT website

The Adelaide Vascular Fellowship Trial Examinations (AVT) programme is a teaching course in advanced vascular surgery that has been developed to prepare vascular surgical trainees and other candidates presenting for the part 2 or exit examination for the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgery (FRACS) in Vascular Surgery. Primarily designed for final year vascular trainees or lateral entry candidates preparing for the exit examinations for the FRACS (Vascular), key elements of the AVT programme have now been developed for all vascular trainees including those in the earlier years of vascular surgical training or considering training in vascular surgery as a specialty.

The AVT Viva Examinations consists of a series of viva examinations that simulates the FRACS (Vascular) part 2 examination with timed trial viva examinations in Clinical Long Cases, Clinical Short Cases, Applied Anatomy, Imaging and Operative Surgery. The AVT2009 programme will include a timed written examination (Paper 1 and Paper 2) which will be assessed during the AVT2009 programme with feedback given to individual candidates.

An endovascular focused session on Endovasculopathies has now become a regular part of the AVT programme. In this session, AVT candidates will be exposed to multiple and various scenarios encountered in endovascular management of vascular surgical problems. Similarly, a new Simulator Workshop will allow the AVT candidate hands on time on a high-end endovascular simulator

Elements of essential basic sciences and vascular medicine will be discussed at the Integrated Vascular Medicine Symposium with interactive case discussions of relevant medical issues common to vascular patient scenarios.

AVT2010 will continue a focus on the fundamentals of vascular operative technique with a second consecutive Vascular Anastomosis Workshop -a series of talks and hands-on practical training on sutured vascular anastomosis with mentoring by vascular surgeons.

Imaging forms a significant component of the FRACS Part 2 examination. AVT2010 will feature a dedicated hands on vascular ultrasound session where senior vascular sonographers will follow-up a series of lectures by vascular surgeons on the Fundamentals of Vascular Ultrasound with hands on direction on scanning of real patients on high end duplex ultrasound machines.

Early year (non final year) trainees can register and attend AVT2010 to participate in the Endovasculopathies, Simulator Workshop, Integrated Vascular Medicine Symposium, Vascular Anastomosis Workshop, Fundamentals of Vascular Ultrasound and the Lecture and Tutorial programme, interactive teaching sessions and observe a select number of Viva Examinations.

The central purpose of the AVT is to prepare each candidate for the final Fellowship examination by the use of interactive teaching sessions, a lecture and tutorial programme and simulated practice exams with constructive feedback. The AVT has proven effective in achieving this purpose since its original development in 2001.

We look forward to welcoming you to Adelaide in March 2010.
